Womad East Treatment Plant - UKAEA Winfrith
The Womad East Treatment Plant is a proposed new safety related facility to allow retrieval and encapsulation of radioactive sludges that currently are stored in the EAST (External Active Storage Tanks) located in the South West corner of the UKAEA Winfrith site.
The sludges will be transferred to the new treatment plant by a pumped system between the existing and new facility for subsequent conditioning prior to encapsulation in a cement matrix within 500 litre capacity stainless steel drums. The new Treatment Plant building will comprise of a steel framed superstructure incorporating a 3 tonne EOT crane providing a weatherproof envelope to the mechanical and electrical process plant and equipment required for the treatment and encapsulation of the sludges.Within the main building envelope are a series of reinforced concrete biological shielded cell structures, housing the encapsulation process plant and equipment.
