SWA were appointed by BEL via the mechanical designers to provide a seismically qualified support structure inside the Separation Cave. SWA's involvement consisted of producing a layout structure which would limit the transmission frequency to 20Hz.

The final arrangement utilised stainless steel structural hollow sections, detailed in confined space, integrated with hoppers, conveyors and remote handling maintenance robots.

SWA were responsible for the detailed structural arrangements and full seismic analysis and design of the members and connections. The connections were designed allowing structural steelwork installation after the concrete walls had been cast by making due allowance for concrete construction tolerances.

Some areas of the high level support steelwork were designed so that, if damaged by the dropping of the process drums, it would be possible to replace it using robotic tools.
