BNFL Technology Centre- Sellafield

SWA were appointed by BNFL to undertake the analysis of a new structural steel framed facility that is to be constructed within the existing Technology Centre Building.

A finite element model was created to include the appropriate features of the new steel frame and the existing structural concrete of the Technology Centre. In this case it was vital to design the finite element model to ensure that the seismic input to the steelwork was properly modified by the behaviour of the concrete elements and to include accurate representation of the boundary conditions.

To enable the structure to be designed in detail, bending moments and forces were determined for the steel frame elements for seismic and normal load cases.

Moments and forces in the existing concrete slab were determined to enable a structural assessment to be made on the capacity of the slab to withstand loads arising from the plant modification.
